Lance BowersLance Bowers designs wearable art that is sustainable
and accessible. His goal is to encourage consumers to reject the trend of fast fashion and disposing of clothing when “out of style”. “Fast fashion has resulted in an industry-wide movement towards overwhelming consumption which results in harmful impacts on the environment” (Stanton, 2022). On average, Canadians throw away 81lbs of textiles per person yearly. North Americans send over 10 million tons of clothing to the landfill every year (Recycling Council of Ontario). Lance is an environmentalist/artist who works with many different mediums of fashion. He locally sources materials from thrift shops as well as accepts clothing donations from friends, family as well as clients. His art is a form of protest against fast fashion and climate change and he hopes to influence/challenge consumers to be a part of something bigger. Lance wants to encourage people to see the beauty in what’s left behind and showcase what can be done when you utilize materials that are readily available. Lance is inspired by traditional Newfoundland culture as well as punk/skateboard/underground fashion trends. His pieces are created with comfort as well as style in mind. Lance wants to celebrate the rebirth of the textile as he deconstructs a piece and rework it into a new design. |
