Knit & Weave
Knit and Weave is the formation of threads or yarns by manipulating them to form fabric. Before any project is started in either knit or weave, it begins with an idea. The artist then works through considering pattern, associating colour choices, and gathering and sorting materials to reach a successful final product.
Knit consists of stitches running together consecutively developed through hand or machine. Further manipulation of knitted fabrics can be engineered into felted pieces by adding heat and agitation.
Weaving is the process in which two types of threads or yarn are interlaced together. Cloth is woven using lengthwise threads called warp and width wise threads called weft. The main equipment used in weaving is the loom, a device that holds warp threads in place while filling threads are woven through them.
As knit and weave are ways of creating cloth, so is felting. Through the hand manipulation of certain fibres; friction and water, one can create beautiful cloth. This is one of the earliest forms of cloth!
