Surface Embellishment
Surface embellishments allow a person to add part of themselves to their work. By adding a person’s own style or personality to fabric they also create more interest. Adding embellishments to fabric can take the form of absolute stitching, beads, glass or precious stones, wood, wool, and animal products. It can be applied to a variety of surfaces, including 3-d, and sculpture. To enhance - is usually the final objective.
There are two main types of embroidery construction, hand and machine. Hand embroidery involves hundreds of stitches and is constructed using a needle. Threads or thread like materials are used to apply embellishments to fabric. Free style machine embroidery is where an artist uses a sewing machine without the aid of a foot. Using only basic machine settings, the artist creates imagery by applying machine stitches in a free motion. Quilting is included in surface embellishment, describing when pieces of fabric are sewn together.
